Böker Partners up with CobraTec Yet Again for OTF Pen

Böker continues to roll out new automatic knives; their latest project in the genre is something quite different. The Böker Plus OTF Pen combines two different EDC tools, adding an automatic blade to a durable pen design.If you had to draw up a product based on the name “OTF Pen,” you’d probably come up with something similar to Böker’s creation. The pen itself is made from aluminum, with a chassis that echoes other “tactical” pens in the Böker lineup; the narrow waist flares out again towards the pen tip, creating an almost kubaton-like profile. The pen itself, a ball point, is deployed by twisting the pen barrel.
But the main selling point (pun intended) on the OTF pen is found at the opposite end. After the end cap is unscrewed, users can then deploy an automatic blade by pressing up on the pocket clip; pushing it in the other way retracts the blade again. The blade is a tiny drop point, measuring 1.57 inches long – so this is a backup knife, suited for little, unexpected cutting chores and not intended as a complete EDC package. Sometimes with these novelty-style products, blade steel is neglected – but enthusiasts will be glad to hear Böker chose to make the OTF Pen’s blade from D2 semi stainless, so the little knife should hold an edge for quite a while.Due to the legal issues surrounding the format, all of Böker’s recent automatic projects have been made with help from OEMs in the USA. One of Böker’s go-to partners for automatics is CobraTec, a Texas-based shop that put together the Kwaiken OTF and a new Balisong release. CobraTec makes an OTF pen of its own, and the Böker knife bears a strong family resemblance to that product.

Holey or Unholey, the 2021 CRKT Squid is now an assisted opener Folding Knife

When Lucas Burnley designed the Squid, we have no idea if he knew how popular it would be. It’s been one of CRKT’s best-selling knives for years now, and it’s had a few different makeovers. For 2021, CRKT is adding a little power and deco to the CRKT Squid with two versions that are both assisted openers. The CRKT Squid Holey and the CRKT Squid Assist use CRKT’s updated assisted opening system and improve this popular knife with easier opening.We don’t have all the details, but we know that CRKT improved their assisted opening system for 2021. It’s easier to use than their previous system, and one-handed closing is much easier. We think they got it right, and based on the number of assisted openers in this year’s lineup, we guess they think they did too.CRKT Squid AssistedHow do you like your Squid? Holey or Unholey?CRKT is offering two different looks for these assisted opening Squids, but they both stay true to the original (and beloved) design. Both are framelocks with 8Cr14MoV drop point blades and stainless steel handles. Both have ambidextrous thumb studs to help deploy the blade one-handed, and both have removable tip-up pocket clips, but that’s where the similarities end.The CRKT Squid Assisted is slightly larger and features a 2.37″ blade with a bead blast finish. It closes down to 3.59″ and opens up to 5.94″ overall. The stainless steel handles are flat and smooth, beveled only around the very edge for comfort. The steel back spacer with integrated lanyard hole rounds out this handle nicely.The CRKT Squid Holey is slightly smaller and features a 2.25″ blade with a stonewash finish. It’s .1″ thick. It closes down to 3.49″ and opens up to 5.69″ overall. The “Holey” gets its name from the milled holes in the stainless steel front handle scale. The Viper Belone is like you took a typically curvy Voxnaes design, stretched it out a bit, and then put it on a diet. The result is a slim, sleek cutting tool that’s as totally elegant as it is efficient. Viper tells us, “The Danish designer Jesper Voxnaes started from lines typical of the Italian regional tradition to design the Belone: perfectly reworked according to modern and minimalist style, which made him famous in all over the world. The result is a light and tapered folding knife, embellished with refined details, such as the holes in the back of the handle.”Viper BeloneWe tried to nail down the traditional patterns that influenced the look of this knife a bit. We can see some hints of the Pattada in the lines, perhaps some Maresciall, and maybe a touch of Navaja maybe? Since we’re by no means old Italian knife pattern experts, we quickly gave up guessing. What it truly boils down to is – this knife all Vox.The Belone has a fat 3.3” M390 clip point blade with a ton of belly for a long slice. It has a blade thickness of 0.12” and it’s hardened to a 60-61 HRC. Riding on a thrust ball bearing pivot, this manual flipper is beautifully balanced for a fast, easy action. It has a discreet flipper tab which not only helps keep the lines of this knife clean, but it also is one less thing to snag on your pocket.Viper BeloneWith a handle thickness of about 0.44”, it’s a slim knife that practically disappears in your pocket. It’s a linerlock with a plain stonewash finished, bronze anodized, or a blue anodized titanium frame. Additionally, those three models also are available with a carbon fiber overlay with the stonewash, blue or bronze anodized liners. The matching backspacer and the tip-up pocket clip are titanium. Vox says CRKT Ibi pronounced Ee-bee

As Horatio says in Shakespeare’s Hamlet, “There’s something rotten in Denmark.” It’s the pronunciation of the names of new CRKT knives. Take for example the sleek new Vox-designed CRKT Ibi. My East Tennessee brain tells me that’s “ih-bee”, but it’s not. According to famed Danish knife designer, Jesper Voxnaes, it’s “ee-bee”. See what I mean?The CRKT Ibi is as different as it’s Danish name. It’s sleek, slender and even has a copper finger ring, but you’d never mistake it for a Karambit. CRKT says it’s what happens, “When your EDC thinks it’s a kubaton.”CRKT IbiThe CRKT Ibi features a 2.7″ D2 sheepsfoot blade with a black stonewash finish. Except this sheepsfoot is .15″ thick and is upswept if you squint your eyes and look at it really hard. That’s because unlike a standard sheepsfoot that has a straight belly, this one has a long curved belly that round outs the long, loose S-shape formed when the Ibi is fully open.It’s also a manual flipper with the IKBS Ball Bearing System. The handles are grippy, black G-10 on this liner lock, and there’s a copper finger ring at the butt of the knife. In fact when it’s closed and dangled by the finger ring, this thing reminds me of a Marlin (minus the sail and the sword) hung up to be weighed on the docks.CRKT IbiIt’s 4.8″ closed (including the ring) and 7.5″ overall, and the ambidextrous tip-up pocket clip allows just the ring to ride above the pocket line.
