Chuck Gedraitis Brings Auto Deployment to a Knife World Classic

Knife Global.May 27, 2021
Custom maker Chuck Gedraitis combines the classic Swiss Army knife profile with an uncommon automatic deployment mechanism for one of his latest models, the Switch Army. According to Gedraitis the Switch Army is just the latest result of his ongoing fascination with making custom automatic knives. The idea for the Switch Army stems from a common request Gedraitis received from his customers. “For years I had heard people asking if Swiss Army knives cold be converted to autos,” he says. Sadly, the mechanical peculiarities of a Swiss Army knife meant this wasn’t possible. “Other single blade knives have been converted but unfortunately there is just not enough room inside the knife for a spring.” But with nearly two decades of automatic knife work under his belt, Gedraitis decided that instead of converting Swiss Army knives, he would build a new knife with the Swiss Army style, but adapted for automatic deployment from the beginning. “I have been building autos for close to 20 years and I had recently started building scale release autos,” he explains. “This led me to the idea of building the Switch Army auto as a scale release.”The Switch Army in actionGedraitis’s scale deployment works much as you’d imagine: by pushing the show side scale to the right, the 3.25-inch blade fires out. Unlike many other single action automatics, which incorporate their lock right into the button deployment mechanism, the Switch Army’s lock is separate from its automatic component. It’s a titanium liner lock, built into the off-side scale, as it would be on a manual knife. Gedraitis admits there is a lot going on beneath the clean Swiss Army knife stylings. “The scale release is moderately difficult to produce, adding additional moving parts to any knife increases the difficulty.” But he says the extra work is worth the effort, creating something that is not only fun to fidget with, but offers real benefits for the conscientious knife user. “The advantage of the scale release is that it is more covert than other release mechanisms. There is no visible button or latch, and if you don’t know how it opens you can’t open it. It also keeps the design very clean and close to looking just like a Swiss Army knife.”The Switch Army comes with the classic toothpick/tweezer comboRight now, Gedraitis makes the Switch Army with four different blade shapes: drop point, clip point, dagger, or barlow-style spear point. Just like their Swiss inspiration, each Switch Army knife comes with toothpicks and tweezers – but generally there are no versions with additional tools beyond that. “I have made one variation that is called a Magic knife,” Gedraitis notes. “This one has two tools, a bottle opener and screwdriver/ pry bar tool which opens manually and is a liner lock.”The Magic Knife variantCurrently, Gedraitis is not taking orders for Switch Army knives. Instead, he prefers to release pieces through his Instagram page as they’re finished; this gives him the freedom to experiment and riff as he sees fit. As far as the rest of this year goes, Gedraitis looks forward to attending some upcoming shows. “My first show in over a year will be the Nashville Custom knife show, May 29th-30th in Nashville TN. I will also be attending the Blade show (table 5-E), June 4th – 6th for my 20th year.” The focus on automatics will continue in future work, too. “As far as knife builds go, I think I am going to concentrate on building more elaborate autos as well as converting some of my older designs into autos. I appreciate the challenge of making an auto and it keeps knife making exciting for me.”   The article is shared from Internet...knifeglobal:https ://knifeglobal.com

Böker Solingen Releases Featherweight Barlow for the Summer

Knife Global.May 27, 2021
Most of Böker’s headline-grabbing releases each year come out under their Böker Plus lineup. Those knives, which tend to focus on collaborations, modern designs, and affordable materials, are produced in various parts of the world, but the company’s factory in Solingen focuses on premium folders, kitchen cutlery, and traditionals. It turns out out a smaller, but still extensive by most standards, catalog of new models each year. Among the latest to join the Böker Solingen line is the Barlow Prime, the company’s latest take on the barlow pattern.Despite the imposing name, the Barlow Prime has a lot in common with traditional barlows. This is a slipjoint designed purely for old-fashioned EDC, with a 2.72-inch spear point blade, ideal for slicing up an apple or opening a box. Opening is accomplished via the tried and true French cut nail mark; that of course means that the Barlow Prime is solely a two-hand opener. And while the Prime design does trend in the ‘traditional’ direction in most ways, it is being rolled out with two different steel options: one traditional carbon, the other stainless. The stainless on offer is N690Co, a reliable knife steel, while the carbon choice is O1, a hard worker that prioritizes edge retention over toughness – good qualities for anything doing EDC work. There are many variants of the Barlow Prime in the works, mostly differing in handle material; but the O1 model in particular also comes with a blackwash coating that should help with the corrosion resistance. The biggest changes the Prime makes compared to standard barlows can be found on the handle. Most noticeably, in most configurations – dubbed “EDC” variants – it is entirely lacking a bolster, one of the key visual elements on many barlow knives. The bolsterless construction also means that the Prime can go without liners beneath its covers, which helps make it a total featherweight in the carry department, weighing just 1.23 oz. There’s no clip on the Prime, but it does come with a felt slip for storage or carry. There are Barlow Prime models with bolsters, tooAs mentioned above, if a bolster still appeals to you, there are variations of this design that come with one; and materials on offer include natural and synthetic ones. Böker’s Solingen factory is also releasing some other new traditionals, including their limited edition Damascus slipjoint for this year, which is a Trapper-style knife with blue maple covers. Chris Taylor’s First Production Collab is a Frame Lock Nessie

Knife Global.May 27, 2021
Knife maker Chris Taylor is releasing his very first production piece through Urban EDC Supply, the Urban EDC Nessie. This Nessie is a modern, frame lock folder version of Taylor’s custom of the same name.In its custom incarnation, the Nessie was almost always a slipjoint, although Taylor did experiment with locking models in the past. “I made a few lockback versions as well,” he tells us. “[I’m] really excited to see it come full circle.” The transition from handmade custom to small batch production frame lock took a lot of work – and thankfully Taylor found the right partner for the job. Working by hand means that you can forgo some of the technical aspects that come with entering into the production realm, such as computer drawing. “I owe a huge thanks to Eric Luther for doing the CAD/CAM work to make this possible and a huge thanks to everyone at Urban EDC Supply for making this happen and putting faith in me to even consider the collaboration,” Taylor explains. The Nessie frame lock’s blade maintains the bulbous, kukri-inspired blade shape that made its custom predecessor stand out from the pack. Taylor originally chose the shape for practical reasons, however. “The blade shape lends itself well to many things,” he notes. “Ideally it would be best suited for skinning and processing wild game. The large belly lends itself well for these tasks.” With a blade length of 3.25 inches, this frame lock Nessie is also more than capable for daily cutting chores. “Everyday cutting is also no problem for this style of blade.”In any of its custom iterations, the Nessie had a distinct ‘modern traditional’ flair thanks both to its blade and handle shape. This frame lock Nessie comes with that same scalloped, modern handle shape, albeit scaled up for the lock on the back side. Like many of its titanium frame lock brethren, its locking arm is topped by a stainless steel interface cap. The sculpted clip is made from titanium as well. There are several options for the show side scale: with a titanium front scale, the Nessie weighs 5.5 oz.; the models with G-10 or Micarta front scales are half an ounce lighter. The three Nessie variationsThe Nessie is available for preorder now. We reached out to Urban EDC themselves to ask what else they have coming down the line. “We have a new Vox design scheduled, as well as some new material combos coming down the pipe for the Urban EDC F5.5,” they told us. “Also, the Urban EDC Half Delta, designed by Dustin Snyder, is en route from the manufacturer and making a splash in the coming months!” The article is shared from Internet...knifeglobal:https ://knifeglobal.com

GiantMouse Clyde Line Expands with More Affordable Aluminum Version

Knife Global.May 27, 2021
A new version of the storied GiantMouse Clyde is on the way. The design itself remain the same, but changes to the blade and handle materials make this version of the Clyde more accessible than the original. The Clyde is a well-known character in GiantMouse’s lineup. It was originally teased in the fall of 2018, but due to quality control issues with the first batch, it didn’t become available until August of the next year. Designers Jesper Voxnaes and Jens Ansø pulled in inspiration from Japanese, Persian, and Nordic bladecraft and created a stylish everyday carry knife with a lot of personality – a personality that took on a life of its own as the delayed release stretched on and there well-intentioned jokes on social media from GiantMouse fans, eager to get their hands on the knife, and the company itself, eager to release it.All of the key dimensions on this new Clyde are the same, from the 3-inch trailing point blade, to the humpbacked handle, to liner lock mechanism. The major changes are material in nature. Instead of the Elmax we saw on the original model, this Clyde’s blade is made from N690Co. In comparison to the powder metallurgy Elmax, N690 is definitely a lesser steel, but still a well-regarded performer, with higher than average edge retention, and high stain resistance. It is also much easier to maintain than Elmax, especially if you don’t have an advanced sharpening setup. The Clyde came out with both Micarta- and brass-scaled options; this latest version has full aluminum scales, either black or candy apple red.The two colorations of the aluminum ClydeThe aluminum Clyde comes in at 2.8 oz., which is a bit heavier than the Micarta version’s 2.5 oz., but much lighter than the brass model’s 4.2 oz. The aluminum scales (and N690 steel) do make a difference in terms of the price; the aluminum version is the most affordable Clyde yet, with an MSRP of $145.Tweaks and expansions seem to be a part of GiantMouse’s 2021 game plan. Their last release prior to the aluminum Clyde was the Sonoma V2, a Micarta-scaled, liner lock version of a knife that had previously only been available with titanium scales and a frame lock.
